I've been thinking of replacing my desktop. It's a souped up gamer's PC that's been giving me pleasure with its kickass graphics and soundblasters. But it's already 3 years old, and by technology standards, that PC might as well have been bought during the Jurassic period. Add to that, I can't lug it anywhere. Seriously it's got to go!
I've been scouring the net for a more suitable replacement. There's too many to choose from that I sort of gave up for a while. Until a cousin wanted to sell me his Sony Vaio he got last year. It had crystal clear graphics but I'm through with handouts. I need something that I can buy for myself.
Then I heard from a friend who's now working for Apple– that lucky bastard. He's been raving about his company issued Macbook Pro. I felt like I was in the dark for so long that somehow it's clouded my mind. How the hell can I not think of Apple? After believing that Steve Jobs is an effing genius? I checked out the Macbook Pro right away and immediately fell in love with it.
Man, this laptop blows my mind. Looks like I would have to scrimp all the way till christmas to afford this one.
Dude, go for it! Believe me, it’ll be worth it. I keep repeating this story about how about 10 years ago my brother was asking me for a recommendation for a PC. He was thinking of an HP Pavilion I think. He’s not all that computer literate, so I had visions of his always running to me now and then asking why:
1) his computer has gotten so darned slow;
2) where all #$%^& those pop-up ads come from;
3) what the computer is busy with that it’s not responding;
4) countless other questions, too many to enumerate but you get the picture
Now I’m a Free Software advocate and use it myself (DesktopBSD, which is FreeBSD 6.2 + desktop tools + KDE) but I still couldn’t recommend it for him, not 10 years ago. Today, I just might.
So, I told him to get an iMac, which was competitive in price with his target HP. Now the only questions I get are what the difference is between a Favorite and a Bookmark; between burning and writing a CD; what a flagged (Yahoo!Mail) message is… In other words, none of them iMac problems. Since then, he’s gotten himself an iBook, and he now has two MacBooks, one of them company-issued. I’m thinking of a MacBook myself (maybe a Pro), then I’ll run other OSes such as Windows (ughhh!), OpenSolaris, and FreeBSD in virtual machines.

— heard of Apple’s rumored Newton II (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/09/26/up_next_for_apple_the_return_of_the_newton.html)? Supposed to come out 1Q 2008. Depending on the final specs, I may just get that instead. Or, maybe the iPod Touch, which is WiFi-enabled and has Safari. Heck, I do most of my stuff on the Web anyway, and GoogleDocs is fine for first drafts. Quite a bit cheaper too, at US$399 for the 16GB version.
It really looks yummier. I think I would include that in my wish list.
Posted by Ted at September 30, 2007, 8:59 pmJanus! We’re in the same boat man.
I guess we just have to be creative in trying to save some. It’s for a good cause anyway.
Ted, just in case you stumble on a magic lamp and a genie asks you for your wish, you may want to remember me man.
Silverlokk, thanks for the encouragement. Makes me want to get an extra job just so I can get my hands on that Mac already!
Posted by Javi at October 1, 2007, 6:46 pmI took my first mortgage loans when I was a teenager and that helped me very much. But, I need the consolidation loans again.
